Key learning outcomes There are three knowledge-based and two skill-based pillars of the undergraduate (Bachelor) programme of Political Science and European Studies, as presented for obtaining accreditation for its prolongation. Whilst the knowledge-based pillars provide students with an excellent-quality theoretical background for their Master studies and consequent careers, the skill-based pillars aims to apply the knowledge of social studies, research and analytical work, and to improve graduates' competitiveness in comparison with other graduates. The following mandatory courses constitute the major: 1 Political Science 2 European Union 3 Czech Politics 4 Methodological and analytical training 5 Language training Ad 1 The key knowledge pillar is represented by the field of a modern empirical-analytical political science concentrating on political systems, mainly comparative research. Students are led to comprehend not only the organisational structure of political systems in a theoretical perspective, but even the life and institutions of varied political systems. Ad 2 Subsequently, the next pillar stresses the European Union and its history, institutions and relations between the Czech Republic and the EU. Students learn about the research and functioning of the EU. There are various areas of inquiry, such as the history of the integration process of the EU, actors and institutions of the EU. A significant emphasis is put on the case study of the Czech Republic and its integration into EU structures. Ad 3 The third pillar concerns Czech politics. At first, the history of politics in Czechoslovakia and its development are introduced. Since this is probably a field that students will have come into contact with, the contemporary stances of Czech political affairs are notably analysed afterwards. The themes of Czech politics represent the most inherent attribute of political research, and for this reason, it remains crucial to study the field separately. Ad 4 Due to the lack of sufficiency of preparation for graduates' professional careers and further studies, it remains essential not to omit any methodological and analytical training, regardless graduates' direction to work or continue with studies. The fourth pillar teaches the students to establish an ability to cope with basic methods of political research. Students are given methodological trainings followed by a chance to learn how to apply qualitative and quantitative methods in research. Ad 5 Good-quality language training is a prerequisite for finding a job and even further studies of other programmes. The language training is necessary and indispensable regarding the overall qualifications students gain at the university. The undergraduate (Bachelor) studies handle the pillar by three forms as follows: a) Students must pass at least one unabridged language exam which is preceded by a systematic preparation within the minimum of two consecutive terms. Except for language courses of English or German for political science students, there is an eventuality to choose from other languages as offered by the Language Centre (e.g. Italian, Spanish, French), or the student may enrol for a DPES minor course of Political Science English which examines the most significant current issues and how to approach them in English. b) Notwithstanding mandatory readings in English, it is compulsory to participate in an undergraduate class of Political Science and European Studies. Furthermore, some minor courses are also taught in English only. This results in the students' ability to use the language within the field, making the graduates more desirable in the labour market. c) There is a broad network list of partnered universities, each student has a chance to study abroad, esp. through the Erasmus+ programme, which is appealing particularly due to the prestige of the universities DPES cooperates with.

Occupational profiles of graduates with examples Graduates of the Bachelor's study programme in the field of Politics and European Studies are well prepared for a follow-up Master's study in the fields of Political Science, European Studies or International Relations as well as other related fields. The study programme is focused on direct graduate employment too. It prepares experts working at all levels of state administration (including diplomatic services and European organizations), non-governmental organizations, political parties, advertising and social research agencies, mass media or internationally-oriented private companies or in international companies operating in the Czech Republic.
