Week 1: Introduction and Overview, Introductory Notes and Debates on the Course Week 2: Turkey Today: The Islamist Authoritarianism Week 3: A Historical Analysis: The Emergence of Modern Turkey Week 4: Turkish Society: Basic Facts, Trends, Institutions and Patterns Week 5: The Turkish Modernization: Success, Failures, and the Legacy Week 6: Religion and Politics in Turkey Week 7: The Intellectual Traditions in Turkey Week 8: Civil Military Relations Week 9: The Political Economy of the Turkish Politics Week 10: The Kurdish Problem Week 11: Democratization Issues Week 12: Gender and Politics Week 13: Student Presentation and Discussions Week 14: Final Remarks and Evaluations

Learning outcomes
The course is about Turkish politics and society. It covers various key themes that are vital to understand Turkish politics and society, yet the dynamic relationship between them. The major purpose of the course is to give students a comprehensive understanding of Turkish politics and society. While the course aims to present its themes within the wider historical background, it also puts emphasis on more recent phenomena that define the current patterns in Turkey such as Islamisation, or the Kurdish problem.

Evaluation You will be evaluated on the following basis: 10 percent: Assignment 30 percent: Midterm 10 percent: Class participation 50 percent: Final examination You can alternatively make class presentation instead of one assignment.
