Course content
Theories of parties and party systems. The emergence of political parties, their functions, party families. Formation of party systems. Theory of cleavages. Party systems´ concepts of Duverger, Sartori, Blondel and others. Interest groups. Corporatism. Mediation of interests in plurality democracies: neo-corporatism and pluralism. Direct democracy. Institutions and instruments of direct democracy used in modern plurality democracies. Consotional Democracy. The theory of consensus and majority democracy and discussion about their suitability. Territorial administrative organization of the state. Unitary state, regionalism and federalism.

Learning outcomes
This course is held in Czech. The main aim of this compulsory course is to deepen and extend students´ theoretical knowledge on the issue of political systems gained in the course Political Science theories. Another objective is to gain the ability to analyze the empirical findings of political phenomena. Course is structured thematically. Each topic is viewed both in perspective of theoretical concepts and in perspective of real phenomenon occurring in the political process. Courses KPS1 and KPS2 continue in the field of comparative politics. Together, these three compulsory courses are one of main focuses of bachelor study of Political Science and European Studies at KPES FF UP.

Oral exam, Essay

Credit: Essay and activ participation in seminar. Oral examination based on: 1) Content of lectures 2) Mandatory Literature for Lectures 3) Required readings for the seminars
