Key learning outcomes
The goal of the Master's study programme of German philology is to deepen the knowledge of linguistics and literary science. The programme should teach the student the ability to consider the functions and forms of language, literature, value of arts and culture with respect to distinctive features of German/Austrian culture (and also German culture from Bohemia and Moravia), history, thought and politics. The organizational structure of the study programme is in competence of students themselves, it provides a high degree of specialization, interdisciplinary introspection into related disciplines, it closely connects science with education, integrates the best students into research teams of the Institute for German Studies, enables to get scholarships abroad and prepares students for the PhD study programme.

Occupational profiles of graduates with examples
Even though an ideal graduate should be a "scientist" able to sustain the continuity of the discipline, we do not forgo pragmatic results. A thoroughly educated philologist is prepared to be employed in any occupation connected with the knowledge of German: interpreting, translating, foreign-language management, work in archives, libraries or cultural organizations such as publishing houses, editor's offices, broadcasting etc. Our graduates can exercise these jobs better than a graduate of pragmatic study fields since they were trained to work independently with texts. With the pedagogical qualification certificate the graduate is entitled to teach German at all secondary schools.
