Gnosis als Religion und Denkmethode In the lecture, the ancient Gnosis, its development, and its main characteristics are presented. It is followed by a brief overview of Gnostic variants up to the beginning of the 20th century. The second part of the lecture deals with modern philosophical systems which are partly or mainly based on Gnostic ideas (Buber, Heidegger, Broch, Benjamin, Sloterdijk). In addition, the reception of Gnosis in literature is discussed (Hesse, Kafka, Kornfeld, Kubin)

Gnosis als Religion und Denkmethode The lecture presents an overview of the structure of Gnostic thinking in religion, philosophy, and politics from the antiquity to the 20th century. Gnosis is probably one of the most peculiar religious systems in world history. It dates back to the 2nd century AD when a new mediating religion was developed from the contrast between Judaism and Christianity, which later also influenced Islam, the Far Eastern religions, and Hellenism. In contrast to the "classical" religions, Gnosis is based not only on faith but also on an intellectual assumption. For this very reason it was considered as a danger and was attacked by all religions and ruling systems and it existed largely underground. At the beginning of modernity, Gnostic thinking, mainly in Germany and Austria, experienced a renaissance, which was reflected in increased reception in philosophy and literature.
