Course content
|
The individual "Text Linguistics" seminars provide an overview of various methods of text-linguistic analysis. Through the analysis of selected German texts, students will become familiar with the following topics: 1) Cohesion 2) Coherence 3) Co-reference 4) Anaphoric and cataphoric reference in text 5) Theme and rheme 6) The specific features of selected text types. In doing so, they will practise linguistic phenomena that require a perspective extending beyond the boundaries of a single sentence: 7) word order 8) the use of definite and indefinite articles 9) selected conjunctions. Given the growing proportion of visual elements in newspaper texts, students will also be introduced to the methods of 10) multimodal text analysis - and, as part of this, will analyse 11) comics 12) advertisements

Learning outcomes
|
Series of individual linguistic seminars.
The seminars aim at expanding students' knowledge of current topics in contemporary modern text linguistics. Students will become acquainted with reference literature concerning individual partial topics of the discipline, they will be able to perform independent linguistic text analysis and apply their knowledge in their professional life. A special emphasis is laid on disciplines that have developed since the second half of the 20th century, after the so-called pragmatic turn.

Prerequisites
|
The seminar is intended for all students of the Palacký University (at least B2 level of Garman).

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Analysis of Creative works (Music, Pictorial,Literary), Seminar Work
1) attendance at lectures (max. 3 absences) 2) a successful oral presentation 3) a short written seminar paper or an alternative assignment (e.g. preparing a final quiz, a popular science presentation).
