Learning outcomes
This course is about getting to know the epoch of the Baroque in general cultural terms as well as from a specific literary perspective. We will focus primarily on the German-speaking countries and examine how society developed in the German and Austrian principalities between the end of the 16th century and around 1760. The epoch we are dealing with therefore lies between Humanism/Renaissance and the Enlightenment. Since the texts from this period are linguistically quite complex, your reading list will mainly contain examples that are very short (especially poetry) or essays on specific topics of the Baroque period. You will find a thesis sheet for each lecture in the Moodle materials. You will receive the questions to be used in the written exam towards the end of the semester as a question catalogue, which will also be posted in the materials on Moodle.
Students will gain insight into literature and literary criticism in selected periods as well as knowledge on topics dealt with in German language literature. A special emphasis is laid on the knowledge of the historical and cultural-historical context.
Prerequisites
The lecture is intended for all students of the Palacký University. Students of other than German programmes who sign up for this "course" can choose any actual course from the modular selection of the Department for German studies that belongs to the "Literature" modulus, whether it is a lecture to particular periods of German literature from the Middle Ages to modern literature, or seminars to particular authors, works, problems or exercises in translation of fiction.
