Few genres have enjoyed as much popularity at the end of the last millennium and the beginning of this one as the dystopia. And the number of novels and films that deal with a bleak future in which humanity suffers the consequences of its own social and political (mis)developments, out-of-control inventions and ecological disasters is likely to continue to grow. The aim of the seminar is to present typical themes, motifs, narrative structures ... of dystopia as well as its socio-critical function. Although the focus will be on texts from German-language literature, novels and films of other provenance will also be discussed. Topics: 1. utopia and dystopia - introduction, 2. "classic" dystopias of the 20th century (Zamjatin, Huxley, Orwell); 3. dystopia and science fiction; 4. dystopia and counterfactual history; 5. artificial humans; 6. cyberspace; cyberpunk as a genre; 7. genetics, cloning ...; 8. environment, ecology, "ecodictatorship"; 9. artificial intelligence (AI) as a threat Translated with DeepL.com (free version)

Interpretation of texts of a specific period, genre, writer, or on a particular subject or topic.
Students will gain insight into literature and literary criticism in selected periods as well as knowledge on topics dealt with in German language literature. A special emphasis is laid on the knowledge of the historical and cultural-historical context. The resulting competence also consists in an independent interpretation of a literary text and its examination in the literary historical as well as general historical, aesthetical, sociological context and in a comparative relation to the literature of the student's mother tongue/or the second subject. |

The seminar is intended for all students of the Palacký University. Students of other than German programmes who sign up for this "course" can choose any actual course from the modular selection of the Department for German studies that belongs to the "Literature" modulus, whether it is a lecture to particular periods of German literature from the Middle Ages to modern literature, or seminars to particular authors, works, problems or exercises in translation of fiction. Requirements for completion of the seminars will be specified by the individual tutors at the beginning of the course. The number of the credits awarded depends on the amount of work done during the seminar. It generally applies: 1 credit - reasonable participation, 2 credits - participation including contributions to discussion, 3 credits - successful oral presentation, 4 credits - successful oral presentation + written seminar paper. Credit requirements are subject to modification by the tutors. |
