Course content |
The colloidal systems are disscussed with respect to their preparation and stability on the grounds of description of elemental characteristics of dispersion systems, their classification, surface interactions and specific physico-chemical characteristics (molecular and kinetic, optical, electrical and rheological). Another important part of the lecture is the analysis of many applications of colloids in research and industry. General description of colloidal systems-their definition, general characteristics and classification. Kinetic properties of colloidal systems-Brownian motion, osmotic pressure, sedimentation. Optical properties of colloidal systems-light absorption and deflection in colloids. Electrical properties of colloidal systems-electrokinetic potential, electrophoresis and electrosmosis. Mechanical properties of colloidal systems-viscosity, tixotropy. Preparation and purification of colloids-dispersion and condensation methods, ultrafiltration, dialysis. Surfactants, production and characteristics of micelles. Colloidal systems stability and its affecting. Basic experimental methods for studying the colloidal systems. True solutions of macromolecular substances and their colloidal properties. Examples of preparation and utilization of suspensions, pastes and gels in practice. Examples of preparation and utilization of emulsions, foams and aerosols in practice.
