Course content
Comparative Politics and Political History of Europe Revolution and State The formation of the modern state European constitutionalism Year 1848 in Western and Central Europe The Great War and its impact on political systems Finding solutions to the postwar crisis Successor states - forms of state and government The development of Western democracies The crisis of democracy in Europe The role of political leadership in the politics of the interwar period Totalitarian regimes in Europe Europe on the Eve of World War II

Learning outcomes
Course follows the development of the political systems in Europe from the late 18th century to 1945. 19th century is shown in the form of major trends and issues (revolutions, constitutional foundations, the role of nationalism and national emancipation, parliamentary reforms, evolution of political parties). Special attention is paid to interwar period, and the impact of World War II on political systems. Lectures and course readings aim to classification and comparison of selected political systems.
Ability to analyze creation and development of different types of regimes in 19th century and inter-war Europe Application of political theory and methods for furher studies Ability of critical analysis of advanced academic literature in Czech and English.
