Course content
The Age of Reason; Romantic idealism vs. Romanticism; nationalism at the end of the19th century and the origin of Medievalistics. The Heidelberg school: Percy E. Schramm, Ernst H. Kantorowicz The French school and its predecessors: H. Pirenne, L. Halphen, É. Durkheim, M. Bloch, L. Febvre, F. Braudel, J. Le Goff, E. Le Roy Ladurie, G. Duby, B. Geremek, A. Gurevič and others. Formalism: E. Panofsky, E. R. Curtius. The "Cultural nostalgia" program: J. R. R. Tolkien and others. The American school: Ch. H. Haskins and others. Outside movements: E. Gilson, J. Huizinga. Postmodern period: U. Eco. History (Medievalistics) for the 21st century - art or science?

Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to introduce the great personalities of world Medievalistics from Romanticism to so-called "Post-modernity". Together with the troubled fates of significant Medievalists, the main ideal courses of this discipline will be outlined. This course is based on reading literature from the works of chosen historians, as these serve as documentation of the most significant changes in the perception of the Middle Ages.
Students will gain knowledges of most important trends of medieval studies since the end of 19th century.
Prerequisites
Completed course of Medieval History.

Written exam, Student performance

Credits will be granted after passing the test successfully. The test will include both the subject matter lectured on and knowledge of independent reading (see the list of literature).
