Course content
The Latin paleography of early modern ages is not a discipline on its own, it is unseparable part of the Latin paleography as one of the auxilliary historical disciplines studying the scripts of the Latin sphere. In fact, the subject of the course is intended both chronologically and morphologically, because the specifics of the Latin script in modern times. The course of modern age paleography therefore follows lessons of mediaeval latin paleography. This course uses morphological, genetic and model analysis of scripts to define principles of a classification of modern script. The course then follows a development of script not only in czech lands, but also in european context. Lectures focus on both neogothic and humanist scripts. Lectures also describes how both styles of scripts influenced each other and how they influenced scripts in particular lands, with a special reference to czech lands. PZ

Learning outcomes
The aim of lectures is to introduce students to the main trends of development of latin script in the early modern era. That means especially a genesis of czech and german neogothic script and a reception and adaptation of humanist script in the late gothic age, Renaissance and Baroque. Students will also learn to correctly classify those types of modern scripts. Students will also learn in seminars how to read those scripts with an aid of sample texts of historical documents and scribe schoolbooks. The course is ended with written test for credits. PZ

Knowledge of the Latin paleography of the previous eras is expected. PZ

Assessment methods and criteria
Student performance

Active participation in lessons. Regular preparation for seminars, which means to make transliteration of specified texts. It is necessary to make a transliteration of specified texts to receive credits. PZ
