Course content |
Key topics: funeral sermon as a primary source for research of gender related questions, history of body, illness, old age and death, history of traveling, for research of history of piety, confessionalisation, conversion, exile, history of representation and power. Specific topics are based on the analysis of Czech early modern funeral sermons, especially: Sermon by Antonín Josef Dreser over bishop of Olomouc, cardinal Schrattenbach (1738); Georg Scherer and his sermon over Karel of Mansfeld. Controversial court preacher at the trun of the 16th and 17th century and his funeral sermons; Sermon by Jan Maget over Cecílie of Liechtenstein-Castelkorn (1667); Sermon by Jan Rosacius Hořovský over Polyxena of Šternberk, born of Valdštejn (1620/1621); Sermon by Drese rover Maxmiliána Marie of Rottal, born of Lichtenštejn (1741); Sermon by Josef Antonín Hauff over Wolfgang, count Serena (1744); Sermon by Hynek Mladota ze Solopysk over Kateřina Anna of Říčany (1674).

Learning outcomes |
The course freely follows to the course Born to Death (XKSR). The aim is to show how funeral sermons are informative in relation to topics connected with political, cultural and social history of early modern period (funeral sermons such as a source for gender research, history of body, diseases, aging and death, travel history, history of piousness etc.). These topics are significant for current early modern research, underwent interesting methodological development in last few years etc. The course focuses on familiarizing students with these research trends (their historiography and methodology) and shows how the research of funeral homiletics may enrich the research. The special attention is paid to following topics: - confessionalisation - exile (exile myth) - conversion - women's history and gender history, representation of homogenous masculinity - history of children - history of death - representation of various social classes and professional groups
1. Student will be familiar with several key topic of recent early modern research, its historiography and methodology: gender, confessionalisation, history of piety, history of body etc. 2. Student will read and be able to interpret early modern narative text connected to the funeral culture. |
Prerequisites |
Course works with the editions of early modern texts and scans of the original early modern documents, mostly in Czech. This course does not require attendance in the Course Born to Death (XKSR).

Preparation to each class - reading of funeral sermon from course´s sylabus. Active participation - participation in discussion, sharing notes and idea from reawding assignements, working in pairs and groups. Seminar work. |
