Course content
|
The content of lectures: In first lessons there will be a commentation about the topic of the codicology, introduction to scholarly literature and to a history of a research in the field of manuscripts. Students then will learn about a history of manuscripts as a certain cultural phenomena, while the center of interest is in a description of changes of appearence and content of manuscripts and in a description of changes a function of manuscripts. Students should learn terms for a description of external and internal characteristics of manuscripts and they will also learn about book binding, dating of a book, issue of writing substance, spacing, repairing, typefaces, illumination or notation. The attention will be paid to types of liturgical manuscripts, to codification of civil and canon law, and the most widely used editions (MGH, FRA, FRB, Patrologia graeca et latina...) while discribing a content of a mediaeval manuscript. Student will also be informed about the guide on manuscript collections and about catalogues of manuscripts. The part of lectures will be not only an introduction to rules of manuscript description, but also to a history of scriptoriums, printers and libraries, along with the principles of textual criticism and editorial practice in the field of literary manuscripts. In seminars students should learn to perfectly understand rules of a description of manuscripts, which they should be able to use in a practice while describing particular manuscript. PZ

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of lectures is to give students a basic overview of the codicology and its history, scholarly literature, methods and basic terminology. Students should receive a wide range of related information on origins of manuscripts and their external and internal forms and contents. The aim of a seminar is to teach students to understand, correctly interpret and also to create a description of a particular manuscript. PZ
Student is able to use professional terminology, knows rules of a description of manuscripts and is able to create a catalogue. He/she will have a wider knowledge of a creation of a manuscript, external and internal signs of it and he/she is teached about forms and a history of mediaeval libraries. PZ

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Oral exam, Student performance
Active participation in seminars. To get credits students have to create catalogue record of particular manuscript, oral exam will be based on questions specified in advance. PZ
