Course content
1. Women´s history, gender history and historiography: methodological basis, possibilities and limits of these historiographical approaches 2. Eve, or Mary? Normative femininity and masculinity through the prism of the Bible and the Church authorities 3. Querelle des femmes in the middle ages and early modern times 4. Complementarity and competition of women and men in medieval work sphere 5. Medieval and early modern marriage in theory and practice 6. Widowhood 7. Gender stereotypes in the children´s education in the middle ages and early modern times 8. Artistic sphere - women in medieval and early modern art

Learning outcomes
The course "Man is a head of woman, woman is a body of man" Women and Men in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Times will focus on the social, cultural and gender aspects of the history of the medieval and early modern period. The main narrative line of the course is the position of women in medieval and early modern society accentuated from various angles, always seen in complementary relation to men´s history, following the methodological basis of gender history. Emphasis will be placed on work with contemporary texts and relevant secondary literature. Active participation of students in the discussions is expected.
The student will improve his/her knowledge of the history of the medieval and early modern times and will enrich it with various social, cultural and gender aspects. He/she will learn how to work with contemporary sources and relevant secondary literature. He/she will apply the acquired knowledge by preparing his/her presentation and by discussions at the course.
Prerequisites
General knowledge of the history of medieval and early modern times.
