Course content
1. Introduction of the course, basic and recommended literature, distribution of the tasks and presentations to the students. 2. Introduction to the issue of papacy, explanation of the basic terms (Vatican City State, Holy See, the papacy, Roman Curia, papal diplomacy, sources of the papal influence, basic chronology of the 20th century papacy, historical development of the conclave). 3. Pontificate of the Pius X. (19031914, the life and election of Giuseppe Sarto, the church in the whirl of modernist crisis) and Benedict XV. (19141922, the life and election of Giacomo della Chiesa, the role of papal diplomacy during the Great War, papacy and Versailles peace system) 4. Pius XI.: the life and election of Achille Ratti, the era of concordats, spread of the church in the third world, the clash of the papacy with Nazism, Communism and Fascism. 5. Pius XII.: the life and election of Eugenio Pacelli, the role of Holy See during the Second World War. 6. Pius XII. and the ascension of communism in the Central and Eastern Europe 7. John XXIII.: the life and election of Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, mediation efforts of the papacy between hostile blocs, Second Vatican Council 8. Paul VI.: the life and election of Giovanni Battista Montini, implementation of the Second Vatican Council reforms, tensions between reformist and conservative wing of the church, Ostpolitik of the Holy See 9. John Paul II.: the life and election of Karol Wojtyla, the turnover of the papal policy towards communist regimes, globalization of the papacy, the fall of communism in Central and Eastern Europe, church reforms during the pontificate of John Paul II. 10. Learning outcomes
Main goal of the course Papacy in the 20th century is to introduce students to the issue of modern papacy development. During the first lectures, students get familiar with some of the elementary terms, related to the papacy as the institution (Holy See, Vatican City State, the Roman Curia etc.). Thereafter, the course analysis particular pontificates in the chronological order, the attention is paid not only to the religious development of the papacy and Roman Catholic Church in the 20th century, but also to the political dimension of the papal diplomacy (Holy See and its influence in the international relations). This course was established within the project of Inovation of Study of Historical Science at Palacký University, reg. no. CZ.1.07/2.2.00/28.0025.
The students deepen their knowledge of the 20th century history and get an overview of the modern church development with special focus to the role of papacy in the 20th century.
