- ruler at the turn of the 17th and 18th century origin of the Sun King (Le Roi Soleil)? history of the idea - theoretical determination of sovereignty in Europe between the Peace of Westphalia and the Enlightenment - "the fabrication of king" ways of assertion and image of sovereignty (election, coronation, triumphal entries etc. festivities, coins, theatre, architecture, "political testaments") first of all by an example of August the Strong - the other then rulers (Louis XIV, Leopold I, Joseph I, Johan Sobieski, Stanislaw Leszczynski, Frederik Wilhelm I, Peter the Great, Charles XII etc. and their court) sovereign majesty - interpretation of various types of primary sources (correspondence, descriptions of festivities, iconography, fiction, pamphlets etc.) - changes in formation of the sovereign ruler to the state - relation of the ruler to confession religious culture and sovereignty - "afterlife" of the ruler

The course The Sun King/Le Roi-Soleil? The Ruler in Primary Sources at the Turn of 17th/18th Century focuses on concepts and exercises of sovereignty in the European countries between the Peace of Westphalia and the Enlightenment. The course presents also theories of the form of sovereignty it gives a sense of the ideal ruler in the early modern period. It points out some practicable interpretation of primary sources also material culture, explained first of all by an example of August the Strong, the elector of Saxony and the king in Poland. Students will be required to give a presentation on a selected topic (interpretation of an European ruler) and to submit notes and bibliography. This course was established within the project of Inovation of Study of Historical Science at Palacký University, reg. no. CZ.1.07/2.2.00/28.0025.
Students acquire new interpretative skills and deepen their knowledge about the 17th and 18the century/ies (and its period mentality). Students also apply acquired pieces of knowledge and reflections by preparation of interpretation of a chosen primary source-material.

Mark, Oral exam
- class attendance - participation in the class discussions - student must read assigned readings before coming to the class - student will be required to give a presentation on a selected topic and to submit notes and bibliography.
