This course is taught in English. The new title for this course is: Middle East from Muhammad to Napoleon Starting from the dawn of the Islamic civilization in the seventh century, this course studies the political, social and cultural history of the Islamic Middle East to 1800 within the broader framework of global history. Who is the Islamic Muhammad and historical Muhammad? How are they similar and different? How was Islam born and how did it grow into a world religion in a span of two centuries? How did the spread of Islam influence European civilization? What are the theological doctrines of Islam? What did the Islamic civilization achieve during its Golden Age roughly between 800 and 1100? What were the main theological debates in early Islam and how did those debates determine the later development of Muslim communities? What is the meaning of terms such as Sunni, Shia, selefi, caliph, or caliphate? What are the historical roles of Arabs, Iranians, Turks, and the states they have established from Iberia to Central Asia in the making of modern Middle East? In this course, students will find a chance to learn the history of Islam and Muslim societies in the Middle East. By the end of the course, students will be able to critically think about many present-day global issues regarding Muslim societies and Islamic faith. Students enrolled in this course may determine themselves the way their grade is calculated based on one of three options: reading books, writing an original research paper, or classical examinations. Grading: Your final grade will be determined based on your performance on two separate and mandatory assignments. 1. (25% of final grade) The first assignment is an in-class presentation of a book about the Middle East and Islamic societies in your native language or in English. For this assignment, you should ideally determine yourself a book written by an academic, read that book in its entirety, and present this book in-class. I urge everyone to prepare ppt. presentations for this assignment. The assignment should... (more information in class) 2. The remaining 75% of your final grade will be determined based on one of the below options below. You should choose either option a or b. a) Mid-term and final examinations (35% and 40%): These will be take-home examinations in which your answers must refer to weekly readings from the required textbook, in-class lectures, and other material handed out in class. b)Book reading: As a third option, you may read 3 different books in English or in any other language including your native. You will prepare 2-page outlines for each book you have read. I will share sample outlines with the class and I will explain further (in class and in person) how you should read a scholarly book in a time-efficient manner without investing the unnecessarily extended amount of time. |
