Course content |
The course focuses on modern Australian history (1788-2000) in the context of the history of the British Empire. It also covers general topics related to the activities of the Czech and Slovak expats in Australia. Framework curriculum: 1. Prehistory, native inhabitants and European explorers, geography 2. The British Empire at the end of the 18th century and the settlement on the Australian continent 3. Australia in the first half of the 19th century 4. Australia in the second half of the 19th century 5. Key phenomena of the Australian history of the 19th century: gold rush, sport, modernisation, industrialisation, etc. 6. 19th century Australia through the eyes of Central European travellers and scientists 7. The federalism movement (1891-1911) 8. Australia's participation in the First World War (1914-1918) 9. Interwar Australia (1919-1939) 10. Australia's participation in World War II (1939-1945) 11. Australia in the 1950s and 1960s: new immigrants, the Cold War 12. Australia in the 70s and 80s 13. Learning outcomes |
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the key events and processes of modern Australian historyin the "long" 19th century and "short" 20th century. Students will learn how to work with various types of sources of Czech and Australian origin (diaries, periodicals, archival sources).
Students will: - understand the key historical processes of the 19th and 20th century - be able to explain the key historical events and put them into a broader historical context - familiarise themselves with bibliography related to the selected topics, main authors and scholars. |
