Learning outcomes
"I will only learn from those series how I actually live," declared Mrs. Šafránková in the film Jak básníkům chutná život. It is one of the most concise replicas describing the period of the so-called normalization. A hollowed out wandering existence that needs television to indoctrinate it, create a value framework for it and imbue it with meaning of life. This seminar therefore approaches the topic of normalization in the form of visual "art" of contemporary television series, which became an unexpected but ultimately widely used regime tool to subliminally influence the contemporary society to be less interested in politics, but rather in relatable human destinies.
After completing the course, students should be able to understand and evaluate the processes of development and transformation of Czechoslovak normalization, especially its media self-presentation. Thanks to the television series, which became a certain phenomenon of the time, it is possible to understand the idealized construct of normalization today. Therefore, the aim of the course is not only to superficially draw attention to the bizarreness of the creation/entertainment of that time, but to show the possibilities of media manipulation, the idealized image, and the context of the time. As part of the course, students will try the biographical method of historical work, which they will apply to the "ideal Czechoslovak person" at the end of the Cold War. An integral part of the course is also a critical thinking exactly in the spirit of the slogan formulated by René Descartes: Cogito ergo sum.
