Indicative programme: 1. Introductory lesson, what is a city and what is a craft guild, definition of terms 2. The origins of towns and craft guild organizations 3. Cities of the High Middle Ages during the reign of the last Přemysl dynasty 4. Cities during the reign of the Luxembourgers 5. The transformation of urban society in the 15th century 6. Guild organisation in the 15th century 7. The pre-White Mountain town 8. The role of guilds in the early modern city, the way of receipt of articles, the differences between feudal and royal towns, the role of guildmasters in the administration of towns 9. Towns and guild organisations in the post-White Mountain period 10. Economic challenges in the 17th and 18th centuries 11. The lagging behind of Central Europe and the role of craft guilds 12. Learning outcomes |
The seminar focuses on the history and development of craft guilds in the Czech lands, from their establishment to their abolition in the 19th century. The aim of the course is to present the complexity of guild organisations, their influence on the running of towns and the development of the economy. Individual phenomena related to guilds and the urban environment are taken into account, such as urban uprisings, the penetration of guildmasters into the offices of towns, and the relationship of the nobility or the ruler to the guilds.
