Learning outcomes
This course aims at giving an overview of nationalism, nation- and state-building processes from both a theoretical perspective and based on the case of Czech nationalism to students. We will cover the most important stages of the development of and towards a Czech nation from the early 19th century until the middle of the 20th century, in the context of the development of European society. Of course, you will learn about how the Czech national awakening of the 19th Century turned into Czechoslovak claims for independence at the turn of the century, as well as how Communism reframed the national identity after the Second World War. The goal of this course is to approach this topic from various perspectives. For example, we will see how the Czech and Slovak communities abroad impacted the outcome of the negotiations that followed the First World War. You will also learn about the German community in the Czech lands - and later in Czechoslovakia - and their role in shaping a country that eventually rejected them. The case of the Jewish community will also be covered, between antisemitism and a wish to belong to the Czechoslovak nation as designed by its first president, Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk. Throughout the semester, you will be invited to reflect on archival sources as well as secondary literature. Discussions will be an important part of the seminars. On the theoretical side, this course will open a door to more complex interdisciplinary understandings of nationalism(s) and the concepts of nation and national identities. All these topics are included in a way making them approachable for undergraduate students from various disciplines. This course is designed mainly for international students in history, nationalism studies, political sciences, international relations, cultural studies, media studies, and literature. It is also meant for local students of the Department of History (KHI) as well as any other student from Palacký University. The course will be taught entirely in English. All readings will be either in English or will come with an English translation when necessary. No previous knowledge of Czech history is required to attend, though general knowledge of European history is recommended.
