Course content
It describes how various problems were solved without modern devices, what methods were available or how scientists thought throughout history. 1. Substance recognition in prehistoric and ancient times. Fire and its use. Theory of elements. 2. Alchemy: philosophy of experimental chemistry. Experiments by alchemists. 3. From the Renaissance to the 17th century: emergence of chemistry. Observation and experimentation. 4. Combustion chemistry. R. Boyle and his Sceptical Chymist. 5. First scientific theories in chemistry in the 18th century. Thoughtful experiment and knowledge. 6. 19th century-period of generalisation. Law of constant proportions. 7. Emergence of organic chemistry. Basic ideas about chemical bonding. F.A.Kekulé. 8. 19th century. Period of generalisation. Law of constant proportions. 9. Classification of elements. Classification according to D.I. Mendelejev. 10. Emergence of physical chemistry: reactivity. Electricity and chemistry in the 19th century-M. Faraday. 11. Chemistry of solutions. F.M. Raoult.
