Description of structure and functions of living systems at the molecular, cellular, tissue and organ level and presence current experimental approaches and models (transgenic organisms) that are used for their understanding and explanation. The General Characteristics of Living Things - terminology; common characteristics of organisms; chemical and physical determinants of living systems; hierarchic levels of organization; plant and animal body shapes. Non Cellular Forms of Living Organisms - structure of the virion; genetic information of viruses; reproduction of viruses. Chemical Composition of the Cell - biogenous elements; water and its properties; inorganic compounds; organic compounds (sugars, fatty acids, amino acids, nucleotides); macromolecules (proteins, nucleic acids). Functional Organization of The Cell - cell organelles and their function; prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell; plant and animal cell; cell morphology and cell types. Life of The Cell - basic metabolism of the cell (catabolism, anabolism); autotrophy x heterotrophy; cell reproduction (cell cycle, DNA replication); expression of genetic information (transcription, translation, proteosynthesis). Plant tissues - evolution of the tissues; meristems and tissues; tissues and their component cells; tissue systems; dermal tissue system in primary and secondary structure; vascular tissue system in primary and secondary structure (secondary growth); ground tissue system. Plant Vegetative and Reproductive Organs - root (anatomy, morphology, metamorphosis, importance); shoot (anatomy, morphology, metamorphosis, importance); leaf (anatomy, morphology, metamorphosis, importance) flowers, pollination, fertilization, inflorescence; fruits, seeds. Animal tissues - epithelial tissue (types and functions); connective tissue (types and functions); muscle tissue (types and functions); nervous tissue. Animal Organ Systems (phylogenetic overview and functions) - skin or integument; skeletal system; digestive, respiratory, circulatory, excretory, reproductive, nervous and cognitive systems; endocrine system.
