Course content
The spoken form of Czech language is seen in light of both empirical (phonetic) aspect of language, and practical application (orthoepy). At the beginning of the course the attention is paid to the relationships of different levels of generalization of speech sound construction. Phonetics - plot - Phonetics, Orthoepy, Phonology and Morphophonemics - characteristics, interrelationships, literature. - Spoken and written forms of language: orthographic principles vs. phonetic transcription. - Methods of phonetic research and software for analysis of speech. - Speech sounds - articulatory and acoustic characteristics. Classification: vocals, diphthongs, consonants. - Phonetic (prosodic) aspects of continuous speech. Basic intonation patterns of literary Czech and their functions. Phonology - plot - Basic terms and concept of phoneme - The opposition, neutralization, distinctive features; phonology of Prague Linguistic Circle (N. S. Trubeckoj) - Subphonematic phonology; distinctive features (Jakobson & Hall) - Phonological systems; inventories of vocals and consonants - Generative phonology, phonological process; phonological rule and phonological representation - Morphophonemics; alternations

Learning outcomes
The course is focused on spoken form of Czech language. Phonetics: Among main topics belong terminology, phonetic transcription of the spoken material and interpretation of speech-sounds´ changes during the production of speech. Phonology: The aim of the course is to present phonology of a language, especially basic concepts, terms and units (phonemic contrast, complementary distribution, phoneme, allophones, phonological process and phonological rules, neutralization, natural class, phonological feature, phonological representation).
Phonetics: Knowledge about spoken form of Czech language: Students know basic phonetic terminology, phonetic transcription of the spoken material and interpretation of speech-sounds´ changes during the production of speech. Phonology: Knowledge in phonological aspects of a language. Students know basic phonological concepts, terms and units (phonemic contrast, complementary distribution, phoneme, allophones, phonological process and phonological rules, neutralization, natural class, phonological feature, phonological representation).
