Course content
Old English and Middle English literature and their legacies. Elizabethan era - theatre, poetry and prose. Metaphysical poetry, restoration poetry and drama. Literature in 18th century Britain, the age of reason and the development of the novel. Romantic poetry. Early 19th century English novel. Victorian literature, the development of realist novel.

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monologic Lecture(Interpretation, Training), Dialogic Lecture (Discussion, Dialog, Brainstorming), Work with Text (with Book, Textbook), Activating (Simulations, Games, Dramatization)
Learning outcomes
After completing the course students will be able to: - know the history of English literature from the beginnings until the late 19th century, - name and characterize major authors and their works in historical context, - interpret literary texts in the frame of the authors lives, historical backgrounds and contemporary viewpoints, - assess the quality of literary texts, - summarize topics, that may be illustrated by a selected literary text in ELT, and language skills, that may be developed by using the text.
