Course content
|
The course is divided into the following general areas: 1 Europe after the collapse of the Roman Empire, Europe trails and dissemination of culture. 2 Art of the first nation-states. 3 Arts of Carolingian period, new architecture and artistic expression. 4 Ottonian art around the 1000. 5 Romanesque art and cathedral of Europe. 6 Romanesque centers of learning in Europe; Cluny and the role of the pilgrim routes to disseminate art. 7 Tradition and renewal in European architecture - architecture of Norman, Anglo-Norman, Burgundy, Iberian tradition. 8 Benedictine Europe. 9 Cistercian Europe. 10 Gothic and Île-de-France. 11 Gothic and transformation of cities. 12 Arts of mendicant orders. 13 Avignon, expansion of papal art and Gothic Avignon.

Learning outcomes
|
The course aims to familiarize students with medieval art in the broader context of the European continent. Based on the selected themes the development of medieval art in relation to the ancient paths, political institutions, the church, the monastic orders and the general socio-cultural factors will be introduced. Students interested in study of the medieval art history in the context of the Czech lands will be provided the information necessary for classification of local traditions within the pan-European context. The relationship between local art production and foreign trends will be outlined to assess the Czech and Moravian art production within Europe-wide situation.
