Course content
The main aims are collecting samples in the field and documentation; determination of causal agents; methods of cultivation and inoculation; microscopical study of infection structures of fungal pathogens and pathological changes in plant anatomy; digital data processing, image analysis in phytopathology. 1. Diagnostics of plant diseases. Symptoms, microscopical methods, biochemical and molecular markers. Causal agents - focused on viruses, bacteria, oomycetes, fungi. 2. Isolation of pathogens from infected plant material. Methods of cultivation and inoculation. Collections of phytopatogenic microorganisms - Czech Republic and EU. 3. Testing of plant resistance to pathogens, or resistance of pathogens to compounds used in plant protection. 4. Pathological plant anatomy and physiology - methods of study. 5. Digital image processing, image analysis in phytopathology. 6. Automatic classification vs. trends in taxonomy of fungal pathogens. 7. Collections of phytopathogenic microorganisms in CR and EU

Learning outcomes
The course introduces groups of phytopathogens spread in the Czech Republic.
After attending the course a student should be able to: - Compare cultivation and inoculation methods used for various groups of plant pathogens according to their integrity and life strategy - Analyse digital images in order to classify fungal pathogens - Calculate degree of pathogen sporulation, determine damage of host tissues - Compare host reaction to pathogen attac in laboratory and field conditions - Debate effects of plant protection practices on plant metabolism and crop yield
