Course content |
The second part of the course deals with selected chapters from the history of linguistics (pre-scientific period, comparative and historical grammar of the 19th century). The emphasis is put on the contemporary trends in modern linguistics (structuralism, functional linguistics, descriptivism, generative linguistics). Basic notions of the principal linguistic disciplines (phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax, lexicology and lexicography, semantics, dialectology, stylistics). Basic issues of modern interdisciplinary branches (psycholinguistics, pragmalinguistics, text linguistics, sociolinguistics, ethnolinguistics and philosophy of language).

Learning outcomes |
The objective of the course is to acquaint the students with basic terms and concepts from the field of general linguistics so that they would be able to independently and critically read the texts from the the field of linguistics. The course extends the subject matter of Introduction to the Study of Language 1.
