Course content
|
The course clarifies the principal terms in the field of general linguistics with respect to Romance languages and the French language. Topics: 1. Functions of the language, process of communication 2. Evolution of language and its main components (grammar, vocabulary, meaning) 3. Difference between writtena nd spoken form of the language. Evolution of orthography. 4. Genetical and typological classification of languages. 5. Selected chapters from the history of linguistics (prehistory of linguistics, comparative and historical grammar of the 19th century). Emphasis on current trends in modern linguistics (structuralism, functional linguistics, descriptivism, generative linguistics). The topics are complemented with authentic French texts and exercises.

Learning outcomes
|
The objective of the course is to acquaint the students with basic terms and concepts from the field of general linguistics so that they would be able to independently and critically read the texts from the the field of linguistics.
Mastery of the subject matter within the scope defined in the Course Objectives. The ability to read and critically approach texts from the field of general linguistics.

Written exam
Active participation in class and the fulfilment of all the assignments set by the teacher.
