Course content |
The most important topics that will be mentioned are: the relationship between lexicology and lexicography, (types of dictionaries and the current state of French lexicography), current French word stock (Vulgar Latin, the influence of the Frankish language on the present word stock, word loans from Greek, Latin and from living languages, particularly from English), word formation by means of derivation, compounding, abbreviation and acronyms, idioms, doublets, homonymy a polysemy, types of homonyms and synonyms, semantic structure of lexical units, changes of meaning of lexical units caused by linguistic and extralinguistic factors, diachronic overview of the present French word stock. The course will also include exercises and text analyses related to the respective topics.

The objective of this course is to make the students familiar with the development of French lexical system from the birth of French language up to the present day, with the current trends in the development of French word stock and basic lexicological terminology.
