Course content
This course covers the following topics: 1/ current French word stock (Vulgar Latin, the influence of the Frankish language on the present word stock) 2/ word loans from Greek, Latin and from living languages, particularly from English 3/ word formation by means of derivation, compounding, abbreviation and acronyms, idioms 4/ types of homonyms and synonyms, homonymy a polysemy 5/ changes of meaning of lexical units

Learning outcomes
The objective of this course is to make the students familiar with the development of French lexical system from the birth of French language up to the present day, with the current trends in the development of French word stock and basic lexicological terminology. The course will also include exercises and text analyses related to the respective topics.
Mastery of the subject matter within the scope defined in the Course Objectives.

Oral exam, Written exam

1/ Regular attendance and active participation in the lectures and seminars 2/ Preparation for the classes, knowledge of the texts to be analysed The exam will test the understanding of the basic issues of French lexicology.
