The course is arranged into thirteen thematic areas: 1 Introduction to the study of medieval material. 2 Surviving ancient techniques, recycling of materials. 3 Medieval technology metalworking and jewelry. 4 Mosaic, its evolution and geographical differences. 5 Illuminator activity - the manufacturing processes of illuminated manuscripts. 6 Medieval building processes. 7 Stone processing technology in architecture. 8 Processing technology of stone sculpture and stonework. 9 Medieval glass processing. 10 Ancient knowledge in the service of medieval masters, medieval technical treatises. 11 Medieval mural. 12 Medieval frescoes. 13 Polychrome architecture.

|
Course aim is to capture basic issues of the medieval art techniques within the European continent. The serie of lectures will emphasize the analysis of a work of art not only as a carrier of information content, but will be devoted also to informative value of the materials from which the work was created, techniques and processes and the development of his work. This skill is essential to gain the insight to the mechanisms of the creative artistic work leading to understanding the artist's confrontation with the material driven bythe purpose of its use, and subjection to the artistic expression needs. The future art historians will acquire information required for interaction with restorers and will be informed about new diagnostic techniques which are experiencing a new wave of development in these days and place higher demands on the knowledge in the field.

Oral exam
Participation in seminars. Seminary paper, comprising an analysis and evaluation of the materials and techniquesused within the selected works.
