Course content

Parasitism as a life strategy; parasite-host coevolution; basic epidemiological concepts; morphology, systematics, and life cycles of parasitic protists, helminths, and arthropods; ectoparasites and vectors; direct and indirect life cycles; pathogenesis and host immunity; zoonoses and natural disease foci; diagnostic methods and demonstrations of specimens; principles of treatment and antiparasitic resistance; prevention and control of vectors and reservoir hosts; effects of environmental change and globalization on the spread of parasitic diseases.

Learning outcomes
|
To provide a comprehensive overview of the biology, diversity, evolution, and ecological relationships of the principal groups of parasites and vectors, with particular emphasis on parasites of humans and domestic animals and on their diagnosis, epidemiology, prevention, and control.
The student characterizes the morphology, life cycles, ecology, and systematic position of important parasites and recognizes their principal developmental stages. The student explains parasite-host interactions, routes of transmission, the roles of vectors and reservoir hosts, and the concept of natural disease foci. The student evaluates the medical and veterinary importance of parasitic infections and proposes appropriate diagnostic, preventive, and control measures.

Prerequisites
|
Knowledge of general and systematic zoology, cell biology, ecology, and the fundamentals of physiology and immunology at Bachelor's level.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Oral exam
Active participation in practical classes, safe handling of biological material, successful demonstration and identification of selected parasites and their developmental stages, and successful completion of an oral examination covering lectures and practical classes.
