Course content
Field sampling design and standardization of effort; active and passive sampling methods; surface and subterranean pitfall traps; sweep-netting, beating, sieving, and aspirators; light, scent, and food baits; emergence traps and eclectors; extraction of soil and litter fauna using a Tullgren funnel; sample labelling, preservation, and documentation; methodological bias, animal welfare, nature conservation, and field safety.

Learning activities and teaching methods
Demonstration
Learning outcomes
To teach students to select, install, and evaluate standard invertebrate sampling methods for faunistic and quantitative ecological studies and to understand their selectivity, limitations, and ethical implications.
The student selects a method appropriate to the target group and research question, correctly installs sampling devices, and uses entomological equipment. The student describes method selectivity and potential bias, standardizes sampling effort, labels samples correctly, and proposes responsible handling of non-target organisms.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of invertebrate systematics and ecology and previous experience with routine fieldwork; ability to comply with safety and conservation instructions.

Assessment methods and criteria
Student performance

Attendance at all field demonstrations, active and safe use of equipment, correct implementation of assigned methods, and submission of a report describing the procedure, results, and a critical evaluation of the method used.
