Course content
Scope of applied zoology; population ecology of pests; forecasting and warning systems; integrated pest management; physical, chemical, biological, and agronomic control; pesticide resistance; biological control agents, pheromones, and genetic approaches; pests of crops, stored products, and forests; animals of veterinary and medical importance; vertebrate pests and vertebrates as agents of pest control; practical identification of species and damage symptoms.

Learning outcomes
To introduce students to the practical application of zoological knowledge in plant protection, pest management, human and animal health protection, and the mitigation of human-wildlife conflicts. The course develops the ability to assess management interventions from ecological and economic perspectives.
The student explains the ecological concept of a pest, recognizes the principal groups of animals of agricultural, veterinary, and medical importance, and proposes suitable methods for their monitoring and management. The student compares physical, chemical, biological, and agronomic approaches and assesses their efficacy, risks, and compliance with the principles of integrated pest management.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of general and systematic zoology, animal ecology, and population biology at Bachelor's level.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written exam

Regular participation in practical classes, successful identification of selected species and damage symptoms, and successful completion of a final written or oral examination covering the course content.
