Course content
1. Academic writing (passive voice versus active voice; simplicity and clarity) 2. Useful vocabulary (avoiding vague words; phrasal words; synonyms) 3. English syntax (avoiding repetition; punctuation; word order; linking words) 4. English syntax (punctuation; word order; linking words; avoiding repetition) 5. Shaping arguments (paraphrasing, making claims and expressing disagreement) 6. Shaping arguments: in-class discussion 7. Useful structures (reporting; evaluating language; cause and effect language) 8. Using sources (synthesizing arguments and citations; providing evidence and explanation) 9. In-class discussion based on problematic passages in students' writings 10. How to write an abstract (basic rules and useful samples) 11. How to write an abstract: in-class discussion 12. Learning outcomes
The aim of the seminar is to introduce students to the basics of academic writing and provide guidance on how to improve their written English. Attention will be paid to sentence structure as well as larger units of language. A substantial portion of the seminar will focus on the development of an annotation for a scholarly article. The course is designed especially for students who intend to write an undergraduate thesis in English. It is also suitable for those considering postgraduate study. The expected language level is B2.
Acquisition of specialised language of academic writing on the B2 level according to Common European Framework of Reference.
Prerequisites
A minimum language level in English of level B1 of the Common European Framework for Languages is required.

Assessment methods and criteria
Essay

No textbook will be used and all the assigned materials will be posted on Courseware. Students will be expected to draw from the exercise done in class to write a graph description halfway through the semester and an opinion essay by its end. For this reason students are advised to attend all classes.
