Lesson topic: Language focus 6 Conserving the past Reading: Dealing with longer texts: survey, question, read, recall and review Vocabulary: Expressions of reason and result; Collocations: verb + adverb, adverb + adjective Writing: Checking purpose, content and organization of an essay; Writing an evaluation essay Listening: Establishing criteria 7 Wonders of the modern world Reading: How to make reading easier: dealing with longer words and complex sentences Vocabulary: Suffixes; Reporting verbs Writing: Summarizing; Writing a summary Listening: Making inferences 8 Olympic business Reading: Different methods of recording what you read Vocabulary: Expressions of contrast; Synonyms and antonyms Writing: Process writing; Writing a discursive essay Listening: Recognizing the structure of an interview; Reviewing and organizing notes 9 Trends Reading: Understanding visual information: graphics Vocabulary: The language for describing graphs, charts and statistics; Prefixes; Composite words Writing: Using graphs to present data; Writing a report using visual information Listening: Interpreting data in maps; Recognizing tentative language

Learning outcomes
The objective of VCJ/AV2 is to systematically develop the language skills of Academic English. It focuses on teaching students to orientate in scientific texts, to improve their listening and writing skills, and to extend their knowledge of academic vocabulary at level B2 of the Common European Framework for Languages.
Acquisition of academic skills on the B2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference.
Prerequisites
Students must have a minimum language level in English of level B2 of the Common European Framework for Languages (CEFR). The prerequisite is completion of VCJ/AV1. To check which level of the CEFR you are currently at, we recommend that you use online tests, for example at http://examenglish.com/leveltest/index.html.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written exam

Students are required to attend the classes although they may be absent twice per semester and they must participate in an active way. They must prepare for the classes as required by their teachers. They must successfully pass the final graded exam. The final grade is based on the result of the written tests in AV1 and in AV2 and on active participation during the semester.
