Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to apply the basic principles of practical care for persons with visual impairment and adapt communication, information provision, and environmental organisation to the individual needs of clients or patients with different degrees of visual impairment. The student will be able to establish appropriate contact and communicate effectively with persons who are blind, persons with residual vision, and persons with low vision, apply the principles of safe sighted guiding, and provide appropriate verbal assistance in spatial orientation and in managing everyday situations within healthcare settings and other environments. The student will be familiar with the basic principles of Braille, understand its importance as a communication and information system for persons who are blind, and recognise its basic applications in practice. The student will acquire an overview of the main categories of assistive and compensatory devices used by persons with visual impairment. The student will be able to distinguish between aids designed to support the use of residual vision and aids based on tactile, auditory, or digital technologies and, with regard to the individual needs of the client, recommend further specialist assessment or training in their use. The student will be familiar with the principles of tactile graphics and the adaptation of graphical information for persons with visual impairment. The student will be able to assess basic requirements for the visual and tactile accessibility of graphical materials, particularly with regard to contrast, size, clarity, simplification, and tactile legibility. The student will understand the consequences of visual impairment for self-care and activities of daily living. The student will be able to identify situations in which visual impairment may significantly affect the client's independence and will understand the basic principles of environmental modification, activity organisation, and the use of compensatory strategies. Within professional practice, the student will be able to relate the findings of an optometric examination to the actual functional needs of the client or patient, appropriately adapt the examination procedure and communication to the individual's abilities, and recommend appropriate follow-up care in the areas of vision rehabilitation, special education support, or social services.
