The discipline continues and further deepens the issue of alternative or augmentative communication (AAK). Focused on theoretical knowledge related to communication, its specifics and functions with an emphasis on the target group - people with significantly impaired communication skills. Students will be introduced to selected AAK systems and their usability for people with complex communication needs. The subject will include examples of their practical use, incl. discussion of selected diagnostic aspects suitable for choosing specific AAK systems. After completing the course, students will be able to: - understand the purpose of communication, its functions, and when it is necessary to consider AAC; - define the basic group of potential AAC users; - know the basic diagnostic criteria related to AAC; - know the basic principles of building support for AAC; - be able to describe the advantages and limitations of using AAC in practice; - be familiar with possible AAC tools and their (in)applicability in relation to a specific target group; - know which specific tools belong to the hi-tech/low-tech/no-tech category and what their specific characteristics are; - be familiar with the possibilities of support in relation to AAC (support system): experts, legislation; organizations, etc.
