The main aim of the course of First aid is to provide students with a set of theoretical knowledge and practical skills neccessary to provide pre-medical first aid. Students will learn about the most common causes, consequences and signs of damage to health in humans. They will learn about the overall system of first aid provision and will gain the knowledge necessary when providing non-professional first aid, based on the most current attained knowledge. During the lectures, students will be acquainted with first aid provision in acute, life- threatening instances: bleeding, bone and joint injuries, cardiac and respiratory arrest; states of shock and unconsciousness, etc. Content: " Introduction, establishing requirements to award the colloquium exam. " Definition of First aid, meaning of First aid, system of First aid provision (lay, medical, technical), legislative framework of First aid. " System of processes within First aid provision, basis physiological functions examination (breathing, blood circulation, consciousness- qualitative and quantitative assessment) " First aid for respiratory arrest or respiratory diseases (foreign object in the airways, knocked out wind, arrest) " First aid for cardiac arrest; indirect heart massage (for adults, small children, infants), cardiopulmonary rescuscitation (CPR). " First aid for bleeding ( arterial pressure points, pressure bandage,use of tourniquet; venous, capillary or mixed bleeding; internal bleeding; bleeding from an orifice (body opening). " First aid for head, spine and spinal cord injuries (concussion, contusion) " Bandaging technique using available types of bandaging material (patch, bandage or scarf bandage) " First aid for bone and joint injuries (joint dislocation, fractures - open, closed, comminuted fractures) " First aid for body damage due to thermal effects (sunstroke, sunburn, burns,frostbites, body chills) First aid for electrical shock injuries. " First aid for drowning. Sudden conditions - epileptic seizures and other paroxysmal attacks, asthmatic attacks; hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia. " Sudden conditions - Myocardial infarction (MI), cerebral stroke, acute abdomen.
