Course content

- Introduction to astronomy. Dimensions in the universe, observable objects, tools and methods of observation. Coordinate systems. Measurement of time. Calendars. Catalogues and maps. Software. - Celestial mechanics, Kepler's laws, orbital elements, multiple-body systems. - Birth and development of stars. Internal structure. Protostars. Double- and multiple-star systems. Variable stars. Final stages of star developement - compact stars, novae, supernovae, black holes. HR-diagram. The Sun. - Interstellar matter. Open and globular clusters. - Galaxies, galactical structures, dynamics of galaxies. Our galaxy. Place of the Sun in our galaxy, star movements and their velocities. - Cosmology. Models of the universe. - Up-to-date findings about the universe.

The subject familiarizes the students with the fundamentals of astornomy, astrophysics and cosmology.
