Course content
The field of study is focused on the area of primary prevention to identify, eliminate and reduce the causes of infectious and nonifectious diseases. Epidemiological methodology contains: epidemiological indicators, epidemiological studies (descriptive, analytical, intervention), screening. Epidemiology of infectious diseases contains: nosocomial infections, epidemiology of bact. and vir. resp. infections, immunization, epidemiology of viral hepatitis, epidemiology of zoonosis, epidemiology of disappearing diseases, AIDS, emerging diseases, smallpox, tetanus, diarrheal infections and travel medicine. Epidemiology of noninfectious diseases is focused on the epidemiology of cardiovascular diseases, epidemiology of cancer, metabolic diseases, nutrition, drug dependence, work environment risk factors and environmental risk factors. Seminars are focused on the issues of dentistry: epidemiology of caries, parodontopathy, desinfection and sterilisaton in stomatology, prevention and legislation.

Learning outcomes
Students become acquainted with the basic principles of epidemiological methodology as the basis for evidence based medicine. Moreover, they will learn the essential. epidemiological aspects of infectious and non-communicable diseases, with respect to dental medicine problems.
After training, students should be able to appreciate the population approach to studying diseases in a population; to design a simple epidemiologic study; to understand results of research published in medical literature; to take measures within prevention of infectious and non-communicable diseases on various levels.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of microbiology, immunology.
