Course content
|
Theoretical instruction - 6 hours 1. Diabetes mellitus - definition, classification, and etiopathogenesis. Type 1 and Type 2 DM: diagnosis, treatment principles, monitoring of diabetes control, and acute and chronic complications. 2. Pregestational diabetes mellitus and pregnancy - impact of diabetes on the course of pregnancy and impact of pregnancy on diabetes. Risks and complications for the woman, fetus, and newborn. 3. Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) - screening and diagnosis during pregnancy, oGTT, treatment principles, monitoring, and specific aspects of care during pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum period. Practical sessions - 6 hours 4. Midwifery care for women with pregestational diabetes and GDM during pregnancy - monitoring maternal and fetal health, self-monitoring of blood glucose, patient education, nutrition, and lifestyle measures. 5. Midwifery care for women with pregestational diabetes and GDM during labor and the postpartum period. Specific aspects of newborn care for mothers with diabetes, breastfeeding support, and interdisciplinary cooperation. 6. Patient education and practical management of case scenarios involving women with diabetes - interpreting self-monitoring results, recognizing high-risk situations, patient education, and principles of follow-up care after GDM.

Learning outcomes
|
The course provides students with a basic understanding of diabetology, focusing on the classification, diagnosis and treatment of diabetes mellitus and its acute and chronic complications. Particular attention is paid to the specific aspects of care for women with type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus and gestational diabetes mellitus during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period. The course focuses on the impact of diabetes on pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period, potential risks and complications for the woman and the fetus, and specific aspects of monitoring maternal and fetal health. It also covers patient education, the promotion of a healthy lifestyle and adherence to the recommended treatment regimen. Emphasis is placed on the role of the midwife in providing care for women with diabetes and on interdisciplinary collaboration in the care of the woman and the newborn.
Students will gain an overview of the basic issues involved in the diagnosis and treatment of type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and in particular GDM and its complications. They will be prepared to treat pregnant women with GDM.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Dialog
Active participation in classes and minimum attendance of 90% at seminars and exercises. Oral colloquium and completion of assigned tasks. In case of higher absence, agree with the teacher on making up for the missed classes. Attendance in seminars and practicals.
