Course content
The subject of study of psychology in terms of its main directions. Basic psychological concepts and categories. Mental representations. Consciousness and its functions. Sleep and dreaming, stages of sleep, interpretation of dreams. Attention, its types and functions. Sensory processes. Perceptual organization and object recognition. Perception of depth, size and movement. Priming. Basic types of learning (habituation, sensitization, imprinting, classical conditioning). Instrumental conditioning, insight, observational learning. Memory. Stages of memory, cognitive models of memory. Forgetting, childhood amnesia, constructive memory. Imagery, cognitive and psychodynamic theories. Functions, types and forms of thinking. Concepts. Algorithmic and heuristic operations, reasoning, decision making. Problem solving. Expertise and creativity. Language and thinking. Basic linguistic concepts, signs, symbols and meanings. The hypothesis of linguistic relativity. Basic self-preservation motives: hunger, thirst, sexual and parental motives. Drives and instincts. Stimulus motivations. Complex theories of motivation (Freud, Murray, Maslow). Social motives: Power and affiliative motivation, need for power. Physiological and cerebral correlates of human emotions. Expression and feeling, emotional relationships. Theories of emotions (James-Lange, Canon Bard, Schachter-Singer; cognitive, evolutionary and psychoanalytic theories), functions of emotions.
