Course content
Course content: Intraocular pressure, glaucoma and ocular hypertension; tonometry methods and factors affecting measurements. Assessment of retinal and optic nerve changes; optical coherence tomography, scanning laser tomography, nerve fibre layer analysis and digital fundus imaging. Cataract, pseudophakia, types of intraocular lenses, ocular biometry and principles of intraocular lens power calculation. Assessment of visual function with an intraocular lens. Visual evoked potentials and their diagnostic significance. Practical demonstrations of instruments, interpretation of results and discussion of clinical cases. Study materials: teaching presentations, practical session guides, sample clinical findings and recommended academic literature.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to expand students' theoretical knowledge and practical skills, particularly in the area of modern approaches and methods used in the examination, diagnosis, and, where appropriate, management of selected diseases, and to familiarize them with the relevant diagnostic instrumentation and equipment. The selection of topics focuses on diseases in which an optometrist can play a significant role in primary detection or in subsequent care provided at specialized clinical facilities. These include, in particular, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, cataract, and ocular manifestations of certain neurological disorders.
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to explain the principles of modern diagnostic methods used in optometry, assess their capabilities and limitations, and interpret the results of selected examinations. They will be able to operate the relevant instruments, assess measurement quality, and identify artefacts. They will distinguish between normal and suspicious findings, recognise the need for referral to an ophthalmologist, and document results appropriately. They will perform examinations within the scope of optometric practice.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of clinical ophthalmology and examination procedures at the level of a bachelor's degree in optometry.

Course completion requirements: Passing a written test and demonstrating practical proficiency in selected examinations and the ability to recognise findings requiring referral to an ophthalmologist.
