During the course, the main features of modern Dutch and Flemish literature from 1880 to 1945 are discussed. (a) The beginnings of modern literature around 1880 till the First World War; (b) the interwar period which ended with World War II. Course layout: Week 1) General introduction; Week 2) Literature and Art 1880-1945; Week 3) Social change and literature; Week 4) Technical and scientific innovation and literature; Week 5) beginnings of modern literature - poetry; Week 6) beginnings of modern literature - prose; Week 7) beginnings of modern literature - theater; Week 8) The Great War (World War I) in Flanders; Week 9) neutral Netherlands during World War I; Week 10) new trends in the interwar period; Week 11) "New Eternity" in Literature, Architecture and Film; Week 12) political engagements in interwar literature in the Netherlands and Flanders; Week 13) Summary
