Course content
|
This course provides the students with basic theoretical principles of contrastive linguistics and with an overview of the state of research from the point of view of contrastive linguistics. The students focus in the seminars on their own contrastive research of a selected language phenomenon on various levels (phonetic, morphologic, syntactic, lexical) in Dutch and in Czech or in Dutch en English/German, eventually in an another language according to the language skills of the students. The students get to find out the congruences and differences between Dutch and Czech by comparing Dutch and Czech texts contained in a parallel InterCorp (http://www.korpus.cz/intercorp/) or in the written corpora of the Dutch and Czech languages (Corpus Hedendaags Nederlands, Czech National Corpus - SYN). .

Learning outcomes

This course is designed to provide the students with basic theoretical principles of contrastive linguistics and with an overview of the state of research with regard to the Dutch language from the contrastive point of view. The students will try contrastive research of selected language phenomena in Dutch, Czech and another Germanic language, eventually in another language according to the language skills of the students. For this purpose, they will be introduced among others to the possibilities of using the parallel corpus InterCorp (http://www.korpus.cz/intercorp/) and the corpora of the Dutch language for contrastive research.
The students are familiar with with basic theoretical principles of contrastive linguistics and with an overview of the state of research concerning the Dutch language from the contrastive point of view. The students get a chance to try a contrastive research especially in the Dutch-Czech relation (using the parallel corpus InterCorp) and in the Dutch-English/German relation.

Prerequisites
|
Apart from the Dutch language competence on the minimal level B2 - CEFR also an insight in the linguistic terminology is required.

Student performance, Seminar Work
Being active during the seminars, carrying out assignments systematically, including the study of scientific articles, presentation of own research and handing in a seminar paper (analysis of a chosen language phenomenon from the contrastive point of view).
