What is language? Prominent philosophers and language thinkers in (European) history have tried to answer this question, albeit without finding a consensus about it. With classical antiquity as the starting point and our time as the end point, we will study in a more profound way the various answers these thinkers have given to this still pertinent question. In this way we discuss various aspects of their interpretation of language, with an emphasis on its function and the relationship of language to man, the world and knowledge.
