Course content
|
This course is designed to provide the students with basic knowledge and first hand experience concerning stylistic rules of translating various types of texts from the Dutch to the Czech language. Firstly, the students get to know the characteristic features of the specific functional styles through the means of analysing parallel illustrative texts. Then are the students provided with an overview of functional build up elements of the communicate and of the compositional characteristics of the means of expression of the Czech language. Special attention is on one hand being paid to frequent stylistic mistakes and deficiencies in general (for example the unright syntagma, extreme expressiveness of the expression, clustering the uncoordinated elements, untrue subordinate clauses, anacoluthon, zeugma, attraction, contamination), on the other hand to the stylistic mistakes and deficiencies found in the students' own translations (thoughtless choice of words, using unnecessary words and expressions, violations of the Czech word order rules etc.). The students rehearse their stylistic skills through the means of translating texts from the Dutch to the Czech language or through carrying out editing assignments within defective texts. They evaluate and analyse the translations from the stylistic point of view, too.

Learning outcomes
|
This course is designed to provide the students with basic stylistic rules concerning translating various types of texts from the Dutch to the Czech language. The students rehears their stylistic skills regularly through the means of translating texts from Dutch to Czech. Additionally they analyse and evaluate the translations of their peers from the stylistic point of view. They also compare parallel texts and carry out various editing assignments within defective texts. Special attention is being paid to building up a text in such a way that it corresponds fully with the characteristics of the means of expression in the Czech language. Various types of stylistic mistakes and deficiencies in the Czech language are discussed, too.
To get to know the characteristics of various functional styles and to get familiar with the basic stylistic principles concerning the translation of pragmatic texts from the Dutch to the Czech language.

Prerequisites
|
In addition to the minimally required level of the Dutch language competence (B1 - CEFR) are the students expected to know the orthographic and grammar norms of the Czech language. This course is being taught in the Czech language. Ideally the student should follow this course after passing a Dutch - Czech translation course.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Oral exam, Analysis of linguistic, Dialog
Carrying out homework tasks and other assignments systematically, being active during the seminars, handing in a portfolio of revised translations from the Dutch to the Czech language and of the edited defective texts, making a final course translation.
